Repairing the world, tikkun olam, is very important in Judaism through righteous acts, tzedakah, and acts of loving kindness, gemilut chasadim.
It is our duty to help those in need both locally and abroad. Those needing immediate help are the people of Burma and China as a result of the devastating cyclone and earthquake.
We, at Hillel, would like to ask you to do your part of repairing the world and donate what you can to these troubled areas.
The UJA has set up a relief fund for Burma, which you can get to here.
The Canadian Red Cross has set up a fund for the earthquake in Sichuan, China that took place earlier this week, which can be access here.
For information on Burma and China, please see the following:
“Cyclone slams Burma, casualties feared“
“Burmese Jews going home as Jewish group mounts aid effort“
“Where to give: How to help cyclone victims in Myanmar“
“China warns of burst dams as quake death toll rises to nearly 15,000“
sounds great. just be sure that the money is indeed going to where you want it to go….watch out for overhead/admin/fundraising costs that eat up huge percentaages of each donation.
